Mary Visits The UK’s Second Oldest Emmaus Community
Mary with Tony Bivens, Senior Support Officer, and Falishia Channer, Community Director, at Emmaus Coventry and Warwickshire.
Emmaus Coventry and Warwickshire is the second oldest Emmaus community in the country, and has been helping people here since 1992.
Emmaus helps its residents gain new skills and boost self-confidence in a welcoming environment. Their companions help to run charity shops, assist with furniture and food collections, and contribute to household tasks. They also assist with collecting bulky waste on behalf of Coventry City Council and North Warwickshire Borough Council.
Mary enjoyed seeing Emmaus’ work in Coventry, and their shelter for seventeen people in Binley, which goes beyond offering a bed for the night and provides a holistic, longer-term approach to tackling homelessness. By providing longer-term accommodation, a supportive community and work opportunities to help people from returning to sleeping on the streets, Emmaus is showing how we can effectively tackle homelessness in Coventry.
