Mary Represents The UK At Visit To The United Nations General Assembly

Mary meets French President Emmanuel Macron

On the 23rd September, Mary represented the Department for Food, Environment and Rural Affairs at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, and discussed with French President Emmanuel Macron the UK’s support for a sustainable ocean economy.

The Summit of the Future event assembled world leaders, civil society organisations and policy experts to collectively work towards addressing pressing problems, from rising sea levels to ending hunger.

Mary’s particular focus was on combatting plastic pollution and reducing waste, in her brief as Minister for Nature. She said, “This Labour Government aims to improve recycling rates to 65% by 2035. The UN Assembly reaffirmed its commitments to the Sustainable Development Goals, and this was the perfect platform for our new Government to establish its commitment to sustainability.”
